What is Skin Typing?

Oily, dry, combination or sensitive. For nearly a century, we’ve depended on these four categories to prescribe treatments and select skincare products.

But have you ever had problems treating an acne breakout because it’s surrounded by dry, flaky skin? Or offered a tried-and-true sensitive skin product only to break out in red, itchy patches?

These problems arise because our current skin-typing system is too simple to address all of the skin variances that exist. For example, 80% of all women surveyed will state they have sensitive skin. That doesn’t mean that all skin care lines formulated for just sensitive skin will benefit all 80%.

Skin Typing breaks that down into more specifics.

Skin Typing identifies 16 skin types, based on Baumann’s research on skin’s tendency toward wrinkling (or not), pigmenting (or not), oiliness (or dryness) and sensitivity (or not).

A detailed consultation distinguishes which end of the spectrum your skin type lies and we provide specific treatments and products geared for that skin type as well as, a day- and night-time cleansing ritual to keep skin radiant and glowing.

First we help you evaluate and understand your skin's uniqueness. Then we show exactly what treatments and products you need (and don't need to use) in day and night regimens customized to each skin type.

Buying treatments and beauty products no longer has to be a guessing game-- where you try to sort through the hype and figure out what will work for you. In this system by Baumann, we take all the guess work out of it.

The 16 Skin Types.

OSPW  (Oily, sensitive, pigmented and wrinkled skin)

Characterized by acne breakouts, facial redness and flushing, or frequent skin rashes and irritation.  These inflammatory problems are often followed by darkening of the skin in the areas of the pimples or skin irritation. Dark patches such as pigmentation and freckles often occur. This type has a tendency to wrinkle due to current or past lifestyle habits which may include sun exposure or cigarette smoking.  Recommended skin care products should contain sunscreen, retinols, depigmenting ingredients, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients.

OSPT (Oily, sensitive, pigmented and “tight” (non-wrinkled) skin)

Characterized by acne breakouts, facial redness and flushing, or frequent skin rashes and irritation.  These inflammatory problems are often followed by darkening of the skin in the areas of the pimples or skin irritation. Dark patches such as pigmentation and freckles often occur. This skin type has a lower tendency to wrinkle than other types because of increased skin pigmentation that protects the skin from aging and/or because of good lifestyle habits such as avoiding sun exposure and cigarette smoking. Recommended skin care products should contain sunscreen, retinols, depigmenting ingredients, and anti-inflammatory ingredients.

OSNW (Oily, sensitive, non-pigmented and wrinkled skin )

Characterized by acne breakouts, facial redness and flushing, or frequent skin rashes and irritation.  This skin type has less protective skin pigmentation and therefore has a tendency to wrinkle due to lifestyle habits that may include sun exposure or cigarette smoking. Recommended skin care products should contain sunscreen, retinols, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory ingredients.

OSNT (Oily, sensitive, non-pigmented and “tight” (non-wrinkled) skin)

Characterized by acne breakouts, facial redness and flushing, or frequent skin rashes and irritation.  This skin type has a lower tendency to wrinkle because of good lifestyle habits such as avoiding sun exposure and cigarette smoking. This skin type will probably get easier as you get older if you continue your good habits. Recommended skin care products should contain retinols, and anti-inflammatory ingredients.

ORPW (Oily, resistant, pigmented and wrinkled skin)

Rarely suffers from sensitivity such as acne breakouts, facial redness, or skin rashes.  However, dark patches such as
pigmentation and freckles often occur. This type has a tendency to wrinkle due to lifestyle habits such as increased sun exposure or cigarette smoking.  Your skin has a strong protective barrier so look for products with higher concentrations of active ingredients. Recommended skin care products should contain sunscreen, hydroxy acids, retinols, depigmenting ingredients, and antioxidants.

ORPT (Oily, resistant, pigmented and “tight” (non-wrinkled) skin )

Rarely suffers from sensitivity such as acne breakouts, facial redness, or skin rashes.  However, dark patches such as melasma and freckles often occur. This skin type has a lower tendency to wrinkle than other types because of increased skin pigmentation that protects the skin from aging and/or because of good lifestyle habits such as avoiding sun exposure and cigarette smoking. Your skin has a strong protective barrier so look for products with higher concentrations of active ingredients. Recommended skin care products should contain sunscreen, retinols, hydroxy acids, and depigmenting ingredients.

Dark patches may develop on the face with sun exposure.  Your skin’s protective barrier is weak and this makes it more susceptible to skin rashes and dehydration. You also have a tendency to wrinkle due to lifestyle habits such as sun exposure or cigarette smoking.  Recommended skin care products should contain sunscreen, “barrier repair” moisturizing ingredients, retinols, depigmenting ingredients, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients
